Fall arrives at Ramsay in full glory!
Our three able assistants: Obie, Laddie, and Buster! |
This week marks the 4th anniversary of our move to Ramsay and we remain extremely grateful! We feel honored and blessed to have the privilege and responsibility of overseeing this beautiful estate, and we have daily reminders of what a special place this is. S&S
In the next few weeks we will have a summary post
of the busy summer we had here at Ramsay.

The formal parterre garden east of the main residence is a focal point
of the estate house grounds, and has provided a beautiful and
peaceful space since it was redone in 2013.

Unfortunately, the beautiful green "grass panel" became devastated by a fungus this
past summer, and rigorous professional treatment was unsuccessful. The decision
was made to completely remove the infected stand of bent grass, including several
inches of the underlying soil. The project was scheduled for late fall and was
completed at the end of October.

Any major project of this type must take into consideration the impact on the
adjacent grounds. Moving equipment and materials across the east lawn would
have done extensive damage to the healthy stand of grass there. To avoid that,
we constructed a temporary plywood highway.

The damaged sod and soil was completely removed...
...and 3"- 4" of topsoil was removed as well.
Next, we ordered a special manufactured sand with a heavy
granulated composition specifically designed to drain (perk) water.
The material was installed, rolled, and groomed,
and allowed to settle for 48 hours.
The landscape contractor hand-selected the
sod and delivered it to the estate.

As usual, the proper preparation and foundation
work constituted the bulk of the project,
and the new sod was installed in less than two hours.
The late fall installation on such a good foundation will allow the
sod to settle evenly, and enjoy being undisturbed during the
winter months while establishing a strong root system.
And.... our plywood highway saved the day!
